Blog #13 | The Supreme Court, Sales Tax, and Wet Shaving Artisans

Generally I find the legal happenings of the courts in the US a very dry topic. But in June of this year, the Supreme Court overturned a ruling which may have a very big impact on West of Olympia, so my ears perked up. Maybe you heard about this new sales tax ruling and maybe you didn’t, but I want to explain why this decision will impact every single United States wet shaving player in the game; perhaps even mortally so. I also want to explain the different outcomes it may have on us and a good path forward from my perspective. Let me first explain the current state so I can contrast it. As it currently stands, I charge...

Blog #12 | Answering Some Common Questions

For this blog, I wanted to spend some time examining and answering some very common questions I see asked having to do with shaving soap.   Does shaving soap go bad? When you think of “bad soap”, you might be thinking of a  mold-infested container or maybe something that’s turned a nasty color and smells funny. Let me explain some of what happens there. Since most wet shavers care about craftsmanship, a meaningful brand name, and quality, my suspicion is that this may strike a chord with some of you. That's my hope, anyway! A small disclaimer: some of this stuff is rather expensive for what it is, but keep in mind, I buy this stuff because it (a) lasts longer than its discount-oriented counterparts and (b) is made by passionate people....

Blog #10 | What I've Been Up To

Hi everyone! It’s been several weeks and I want to apologize for the prolonged absence. Sometimes we’re just busy creatures aren’t we? So at the risk of sounding self-absorbed, I thought this might be a good time to take a moment today to give you an idea of how West of Olympia fits into my life. I always enjoy feeling that I have a connection to the person making the products I buy, so hopefully I can provide you a version of that experience with this blog today. As I’ve mentioned many times before, I’m just a hobbyist. I enjoy formulating and making soap because I have a passion for the creativity and science. But from a financial or common...

Today I wanted to take some time and answer some questions about the upcoming release of The Seven Collection.
